Just bought new dates to try today. They are a yellow colored date called Barhi. You eat them fresh when they are in season. August is the time to get them. My husband bought them at Alosra supermarket, from a company called Nidal who grows organic produce. Here they are just coming out of the box and still on the branches.

How do these dates taste? They start out a tad tart but quickly finish with a caramel sweet taste. When you bite into fresh Barhi dates they have a crunch like an apple, but texture more like a pear. They are not juicy, but tend to make your mouth dry. They take getting used to at first. Give them a try if you are in the country now. You can only get them here.
I hear you can freeze them as well.
